01 · THE IDEA

From machine signals to meaningful action

CNC machines can develop unusual vibration and temperature patterns before operators notice a problem. This educational prototype captures both signals and makes them visible remotely.

01

Connect

Collect vibration and temperature readings using sensors attached to an ESP32.

02

See

Send telemetry to FAVORIOT using MQTT and inspect readings through dashboards and trends.

03

Act

Set threshold rules to notify maintenance personnel when readings need attention.

02 · SYSTEM DESIGN

Simple architecture. Clear visibility.

03 · BUILD GUIDE

Build your first CNC monitoring prototype

A practical starting sequence based on the original tutorial. The code below is a payload example, not a complete firmware sketch.

Setup steps

  1. Create a FAVORIOT account and register a device.
  2. Connect the temperature and vibration sensors to the ESP32.
  3. Install the appropriate sensor and MQTT libraries in Arduino IDE.
  4. Connect the ESP32 to Wi-Fi and authenticate with the MQTT broker.
  5. Publish sensor readings at a sensible interval.
  6. Create charts, gauges and threshold-based alerts in FAVORIOT.

Illustrative MQTT payload

                            {
                              "device_developer_id": "YOUR_DEVICE_ID",
                              "data": {
                                "temperature": 42.6,
                                "vibration": 2.4
                              }
                            }

Developer note: Sensor values shown are examples. For an ADXL345, a single acceleration axis is not the same as an industrial vibration severity metric. Calibrate sensors and define an appropriate vibration feature before setting operational thresholds.
04 · MONITOR & RESPOND

Spot abnormalities and notify the right people

TEMPERATURE

Overheating alert

Example rule: send an alert when the measured temperature exceeds 70°C.

VIBRATION

Abnormal motion

Example rule: flag a vibration metric above a calibrated limit. The original tutorial uses 10 m/s² as an illustrative threshold.

NOTIFICATION

Maintenance response

Route events through available FAVORIOT rule actions or a configured webhook to email, Telegram or another approved service.

Thresholds are examples only. Machine-specific baselines, sampling frequency, sensor placement and safety reviews are required for real deployment. Never rely on a cloud alert as a machine safety interlock.

05 · NEXT STEPS

Extend the prototype

Historical trends

Compare machine behavior across operating periods and investigate recurring anomalies.

Machine learning

Explore anomaly detection and predictive maintenance once enough representative data has been collected.

Industrial connectivity

Evaluate a suitable PLC or industrial gateway for production use, with machine controls remaining under approved local safety systems.
