#askiotworld #3:

I am very interested in IoT and would like to embark in this business. How do I start?

Response:

Everyone is excited about IoT, its potential and the promise of billions of connected devices including trillions of dollars in the business. But many are confused how to start their IoT venture.

Everyone is excited about IoT, its potential and the promise of billions of connected devices including trillions of dollars in the business. But many are confused how to start their IoT venture.

Here are my suggestions:

  1. Start by finding the right vertical, market segmentation and customers that have the right mindset to change and money to invest in their digital transformation journey i.e. customers that are WILLING and ABLE to spend money on IoT.
  2. Find their business case and pain points to solve
  3. Check your strength to deliver the solution based on the following IoT value chain. Note that there is no single company can deliver an end-to-end solution. Even big companies require smaller companies to support their delivery ecosystem.

Select one (or more) of the value chain and be very good in delivering that “chain”:

  1. End-device components
  2. End devices and sensors
  3. Embedded operating systems
  4. IT, network and OSS infrastructure
  5. Security
  6. IoT Middleware
  7. Cloud infrastructure
  8. Analytics applications
  9. Visualization applications
  10. Management and applications enablement software
  11. Service providers
  12. Vertical products and solutions
  13. System integrators

The 10 Malaysian Universities Partners With FAVORIOT

Any digital transformation starts with the people. Technology adoption will face a stumbling block if we don’t have a generation of leaders, makers, thinkers, and doers. The same goes with IoT adoption – we need the right people, the right mindset and right competencies. FAVORIOT in the quest to develop a Generation-IoT,  recently partners with ten (10) Malaysian Universities to provide better hands-on skills and tools to the University students (and lecturers) in developing their IoT solutions using FAVORIOT middleware.

The list of the Universities who joined the program are listed below:

  1. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
  2. Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM)
  3. Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)
  4. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
  5. Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA)
  6. Universiti Tenaga Malaysia (UNITEN)
  7. Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)
  8. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USIM)
  9. Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)
  10. Asia Pacific University (APU)

It is expected about 300 graduates every year will be utilizing FAVORIOT platform for their Lab experiments, Final Year or Research projects. The program will allow more than 1500 devices to be connected to the platform.

Cyberjaya (May 23, 2017) – Even though FAVORIOT, the latest startup in Malaysia, is only about 2 months old in the industry, we felt that we can’t wait for the Internet of Things to be in full market readiness and thus we accept the invitation to showcased our FAVORIOT platform publicly for the first time. We have also included the demo with Promosys HawkEYE Cloud monitoring gateway.

FAVORIOT First Public Showcase

The event was held at MCMC. All of the presenters are from vendors and network provider such as SigFox, Atilze (LoRa), NB-IoT (Huawei), Nokia and ST Microelectronics.

Panel Session

Together with the rest of IoT industry players, we were given a small booth at the Experiential Learning Spaces to showcase our products. It comprised of various companies that are part of the IoT ecosystem. It’s exciting to see a variety of players started to mushrooming – that’s good for a start. Hope more of these events can be supported by the government agencies such as MCMC. Creating awareness about IoT is not only meant for the technology players but also to the people at the street and the actual users.

IoT players need to get together

For a start, getting to know who are the players in the industry is also important. I have mentioned many times that IoT can’t be delivered by a single company. You can try to be a “lone ranger” but it will take much longer time to deliver. Every company has their own specialization and collaboration is a better way to deliver a better end-to-end IoT solution. The industry is still fragmented and no single company monopolizes the game.

IoT in Malaysia is still in the embryonic stage but the opportunity is still very big and it’s everyone’s guess what are the killer IoT applications.

Friends from the industry

And the fact that many organizations have started asking for an IoT solution (although they are not sure what “solution”) showed that the interest is growing daily.
